The state of the art may have changed since the publication date.Although the HIV/AIDS epidemic is now in its third decade, infected and affected older adults in the U.S. continue to be ignored and isolated. To address the concerns of HIV in later life, a group of healthcare and social workers, along with people infected with HIV, joined together to form the National Association on HIV Over Fifty (NAHOF).
Through educational and networking programs in local, state and national venues, the association calls attention to the issue of HIV/AIDS as it impacts the aging community. NAHOF publishes a member newsletter, the NAHOF Connection, and maintains a website at www.hivoverfifty.org. Dues help finance advocacy efforts and instructional presentations that focus on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, testing and counseling, and services available to those who are infected.
This summer, (2001) the National Association on HIV Over Fifty, in collaboration with the New England AIDS Education and Training Center will present its 4th National Conference on HIV/AIDS and Aging. The theme of this year's conference is: "What About Us? HIV/AIDS and the Aging Population." The conference will be held June 22 and 23rd at the Marriott Hotel in Newton, Massachusetts (in the Boston area). The purpose of the conference is to share information about HIV/AIDS and older adults with consumers, caregivers, practitioners, researchers and advocates; and to develop and strengthen existing linkages between AIDS and aging networks, and address issues related to the delivery, cost, quality of and access to health and social services.
