Volunteers, members, staff, and activists raised AIDS awareness on December 1, 2000. Holding signs reading "Today is World AIDS Day" and "Honk for AIDS Awareness," demonstrators strategically placed at all four corners of Wilshire and Vermont (one of the busiest intersections in the world) reached over 10,000 Angelenos during their morning commute. Five thousand post cards reading: "Spread the Word, not the Virus, Talk about AIDS" with transmission information and global statistics on the back were handed out to people getting on and off the metro rails and connecting bus lines. We made some noise, we had some fun and we raised public awareness. Afterward, 45 members of the Women Alive Coalition had breakfast together at the I-HOP around the corner. We felt good that we reached people who otherwise may not have known that it was World AIDS Day.
