This year's AIDS conference attracted around 14,000 people from 166 countries. This included over 1300 journalists and media people. Choosing among 800 different lectures and 4500 poster presentations proved a daunting task. This report does not seek to be inclusive of all material presented. However, the two representitives which STEP was able to send to the conference this year tried to attend the sessions we felt would be of interest to our readers. In addition, an enormous amount of material is published and distributed by pharmaceutical companies, governmental agencies such as National Cancer Institute and NIAID, press agencies, and community groups. This additional information seeks to clarify or give another point of view on issues presented at the conference.

The studies presented below are divided into the following categories:

Monotherapy with nucleoside analogues: single agent treatment with AZT or ddI or ddC.

Nucleoside analogues in combination: two or more agents in combination, AZT/ddi/ddc.

Other antivirals as monotherapy or in combination: single agents which are not nucleoside analogues or combination studies with nucleosides and non- nucleosides.

Immunotherapeutics: agents which specifically target the immune system, and not the virus.

Pathogenesis and long term survival: the natural history of HIV infection, methods of how HIV is thought to cause disease and theories on how to stop progression, and factors associated with long term survival.

Opportunistic infections and other manifestations of HIV disease.
