Nevirapine Warning

John G. Bartlett, M.D.
The Hopkins HIV Report - January 2004

Extensive analysis of the Boeringer- Ingelheim database by the company has indicated a high risk of hepatotoxicity in women with CD4 counts >250 cells/mm3 who have been treated with nevirapine. It is the manufacturer’s recommendation that nevirapine either not be used in women with CD4 counts >250 cells/mm3 or that treatment be undertaken with careful monitoring.
