CLINICAL TRIALS WATCH: Ongoing Preventive Trials of HIV Vaccines Poster

IAVI Report - December 2002 / January 2003
Mark Boaz

With this issue of the IAVI Report we introduce a new feature aimed at keeping readers informed about the growing activity in clinical testing of HIV vaccines. "Clinical Trials Watch" will track ongoing trials, starting with the complete listing below and providing future updates on their progress, along with information on newly-launched studies. The table also includes several trials due to start in the first quarter (Q1) of 2003.

This information is drawn from IAVI’s database on HIV preventive vaccine trials, both ongoing and completed (see www.iavi.org/trialsdb). The database is simple and searchable, and attempts to collect all preventive clinical studies to date. We thank the many researchers who contributed information and reviewed entries, and especially acknowledge Barney Graham at the Vaccine Research Center (Bethesda, MD) and Jean-Paul Lévy and colleagues at France’s Agence Nationale de Recherches sur le SIDA (ANRS). We also welcome readers’ additions, corrections and comments (e-mail to trialsdb@iavi.org).

As the table shows, there are 24 ongoing trials and several pending for early 2003, collectively involving 19 different vaccines (of which 7 are DNA-based, 5 use recombinant viral vectors, 4 are protein subunits and 3, lipopeptides). Most are in Phase I, with VaxGen’s two trials the only Phase III studies in progress; both will be completed within 2003, with efficacy data from the North American trial expected early in the year. The majority use clade B strains, but a few candidates (especially among the newer ones in the pipeline) are based on clades A, C, D and E.
