STANDARD OF CARE

Managing HIV
Anticipating proglems can help overcome them.
As more drugs arrive to treat HIV, it's very hard to keep up with the latest strategies and guidelines for care. HIV-is a complex disease that affects every individual differently. That's why experts stress that the best approach to HIV-treatment is one designed to fit each individual's needs. An integrated, quality-of-life approach to HIV care is one that focuses on preventing illness, stopping HIV, and keeping you healthy every day.

Being prepared is part of that prescription. Think ahead of how you plan to deal with problems such as side effects, drug resistance, and drug failure that may crop up (see "The Great Debates"). Don't wait for the other shoe to drop. And don't forget the emotional toll involved in taking drugs every day-it's hard. Do you have the support you need to help you manage your regimen? What do you need to make it easier?

Empower yourself. Talk to your doctor and others with HIV. Read up on the news. Remember:-when it comes to your body and your health, you're the ultimate expert.
