TREATMENT BRIEFS: 3TC Access Program

Gay Men's Health Crisis: Treatment Issues, Volume 8 no. 3 - May, 1994
David Gold

Glaxo Holdings received FDA approval to provide its anti-HIV nucleoside analog 3TC (also called lamivudine) to adults and children who have CD4 counts of less than 300. Eligible individuals must have failed or be intolerant to approved anti-HIV therapies. They also must be unable to qualify for ongoing clinical trials. Physicians may call 800/248-9757 for enrollment information.

In March, the parent company of Burroughs Wellcome Co. (the manufacturer of such drugs as AZT and acyclovir) acquired an option to develop and market 3TC. The drug is presently in phase II/III trials involving over 800 patients in North America and Europe. According to Glaxo, 3TC has been well- tolerated and has helped patients gain weight and energy. An application for FDA approval for the drug is expected in the fall of 1994. 3TC also has shown activity against Hepatitis B (HBV) in test tube experiments and is in Phase II trials for chronic HBV.
