A number of buyers' clubs in the U. S. are now selling alpha interferon ready to be taken orally, either as a liquid or on wafers. In Fort Lauderdale, the PWA Health Alliance is running a loosely defined clinical trial. For those who live in the area, trial costs are $25; participants from outside the area, the charge is $55. For more information, call 305-763-7723. In New York, the PWA Health Group is selling alpha interferon wafers containing 150 international units of Wellferon, a naturally- derived interferon made by Burroughs-Wellcome. A three-week supply of wafers costs $21. It is suggested that individuals only buy three weeks' worth at a time. For proper storage, keep the wafers cold and dry. The Health Group suggests storing the wafers in a zip-lock bag or a jar. Wafers should be held under the tongue for several minutes and then swallowed. It should be noted that the side effects of alpha interferon taken in this from are unknown. It is possible that people who take it may experience nausea, vomiting or flu-like symptoms. In addition, potential interactions with other drugs are unknown.
A study of oral alpha interferon will be conducted at Mt. Sinai Hospital, by Dr. Joseph Hassett. Thirty-five patients will be recruited for a placebo-controlled trial. (There is already a waiting list.) Participants must have between 150-350 T4 cell counts. No patients with KS will be admitted in the study. For more information, call (212) 241-6331.
