Dans le présent numéro consacré aux « Effets secondaires », nous mettons l'accent sur les rapports présentés dernièrement dans le cadre du 4e Atelier international sur les effets indésirables des médicaments et la lipodystrophie liée au VIH, qui avait lieu du 22 au 25 septembre 2002 à San Diego. Avant de faire état des données intéressantes présentées lors de cette rencontre, nous allons dresser une liste des médicaments anti-VIH les plus couramment utilisés en plus de revoir brièvement les débuts de la thérapie anti-VIH. Il est important de porter ainsi un regard sur le passé si nous voulons mieux comprendre les effets secondaires qu'il convient de regrouper sous le terme « syndrome de lipodystrophie du VIH ».
Voici une liste de médicaments anti-VIH couramment utilisés dans les pays développés :
Analogues nucléosidiques
Analogue nucléotidique
Analogues non nucléosidiques (INNTI)
Inhibiteurs de la protéase
Couramment utilisés en Amérique du Nord, les termes multithérapie antirétrovirale, traitement d'association, HAART et cocktail désignent une combinaison de médicaments anti-VIH qui comprend habituellement un inhibiteur de la protéase et/ou un analogue non nucléosidique ainsi qu'un ou plusieurs analogues nucléosidiques.
