Plusieurs médecins ont observé des taux d'hormones thyroïdiennes anormalement élevés chez leurs patients séropositifs (PVVIH/sida) sous multithérapie antirétrovirale fortement active. Curieux d'en savoir plus, un groupe de chercheurs français a décidé de mener une étude.

Chez les personnes séronégatives en bonne santé, on s'attend à observer des anomalies de ce genre dans les proportions suivantes :
Chez certains patients, les chercheurs soupçonnent l'existence d'un lien entre la durée d'exposition aux inhibiteurs de la protéase et le niveau d'une hormone thyroïdienne appelée « T4 libre » ou « thyroxine libre ». Cependant, des études plus poussées sont nécessaires pour confirmer et expliquer ce lien éventuel.
