This is an update of the 2nd edition published in 1991. There is still no vaccine but clinical trials are now being conducted. There are, however, many new drugs that have extended and improved the lives of many thousands of HIV-infected persons. Unfortunately there is an ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor of the world when it comes to providing these new drugs. HIV is still running rampant in the developing world. It is estimated that 30.6 million individuals are infected with HIV worldwide with over two-thirds of these living in the Sub-Saharan Africa. Nurses continue to pay a key role in providing expert, compassionate care to HIV-infected persons. HIV/AIDS content has been incorporated into their curricula and there are established graduate programs in HIV/AIDS nursing.

This excellent book provides a nursing perspective in the management of persons with HIV/AIDS. It is well written, extensively referenced, and intended to update the knowledge needed by the nurses. Fourteen chapters cover the basics of the etiology, epidemiology, transmission, and natural history of HIV infection and AIDS to pathogenesis, prevention, wellness, clinical treatment, symptom management, and infection control to testing and counseling, case management, infection in women, disease in children, minority infection, and ethical and legal dimensions. This is a recommended book for all academic and health science libraries and would, also, be appropriate for large urban public libraries.
