This book is the outgrowth of a research project in Europe--"AIDS: Ethics, Justice and European Policy." The chief aim of the project was to identify basic principles of, and sketch an ethical framework for European social and legislative policy on HIV and AIDS. This research addressed many AIDS-related issues but the most complex was that surrounding testing and screening for HIV, especially in regard to the confidentiality of the results. This is a very comprehensive book covering many aspects of testing and screening for HIV. High on the list is confidentiality and the ethics involved around this issue. Some very intriguing chapters include: "Is Society Responsible for My Health?" "Ethical Aspects of the Use of Sensitive Information in Health Care Research," "AIDS and Insurance," "Should We Routinely Test Pregnant Women for HIV?" "Who Should Know about My HIV Positivity and Why?" and "Is There a Right to Remain in Ignorance of HIV Status?"

An appendix provides a summary of conclusions and recommendations from the European Commission, Directorate General XII, Biomedicine and Health Research Programme, and Cooperation in Science and Technology with Central and Eastern European Countries on "AIDS: Ethics, Justice, and European Policy." This is a recommended book for all academic libraries.
