This is a book is a balanced account of both the positive and negative aspects of gay and lesbian life in a multicultural environment. It covers many issues, including: "culturally shaped attitudes towards homosexuality," "cultural variations in homosexual conceptualization, identity, and expression," "oscillation and attempts at mediation between membership of an ethnic group and the lesbian and gay community," and "interaction (including partnerships) between lesbians and gay men of different cultural backgrounds." Although the book deals specifically with Australia, the information can be applied in a much broader geographical area since similar situations can be found in other parts of the world. Of particular interest is the chapter, "A Social Psychological Perspective on HIV/AIDS and Gay or Homosexually Active Asian Men." Asian in this sense refers to men from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China. "This paper is not meant to be a comprehensive look at HIV/AIDS issues relevant to Gay Asian men. Rather, it is an attempt to illustrate points of convergence in issues that have been identified in HIV/AIDS research, on the one hand, and social psychological research related to minority/racial and cross-cultural issues, on the other."

This is an excellent book that discusses the problems with multicultural gay individuals. These problems can be applied throughout the world, making this a very good resource for any academic library.
