Selected Highlights from the 6th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections

Bulletin of Experimental Treatments for AIDS, Spring, 1999
Harvey S. Bartnof, MD

Over 3,400 participants attended the 6th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) held January 31-February 4, 1999 in Chicago. This conference is regarded as the most important annual research and clinical conference on HIV/AIDS in the United States.

CROI is sponsored by the Foundation for Retrovirology and Human Health, in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The University of California at San Diego cosponsored the 6th Conference.

Approximately 780 abstracts were presented. Reflecting changes in the epidemic, fewer abstracts this year addressed opportunistic infections (OIs), with a concomitant increase in abstracts on anti-HIV treatments and basic research in retrovirology and immunology.

For additional news from CROI, please also see the articles in this issue on side effects of antiretroviral treatment ("HAART Attack..."), women and HIV, and "New Anti-HIV Drugs in Development".

The conference abstracts and audiovisual recordings of selected oral presentations will be available on the Internet for one year at www.retroconference.org.
