(BETA) News Briefs: NIH Research Funding Survives First-Round Budget Cuts

Bulletin of Experimental Treatments for AIDS, No. 26 September 1995
Ronald Baker, PhD

In a surprising development, while Republicans slashed domestic programs to reduce the federal budget deficit, biomedical research funding was increased for 1996. The House appropriations committee voted to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by $642 million, a 5.7% increase over the 1995 level. However, the increase (credited to action by Republican committee chair John Porter) may not withstand a full vote in the House.
