(BETA) News Briefs: Senate Reauthorizes Ryan White Funds

Bulletin of Experimental Treatments for AIDS, No. 26 September 1995
Ronald Baker, PhD

The U.S. Senate voted on July 27 to reauthorize the Ryan White CARE Act. The bill extending the AIDS funding program passed 97-3, after bitter assaults by Senator Jesse Helms (R-North Carolina). The Senator approved the measure that includes language encouraging pregnant women and their newborns to be tested for HIV infection.

A House committee has passed its version of a renewal of Ryan White funding. Full House action on the bill is expected by the end of September. If the House passes the bill (as expected), a joint Senate/House committee must reconcile the differences between the 2 versions of Ryan White Care Act. If the revised bill is adopted by a floor vote in both House and Senate, it will go to President Clinton for his signature.
