(BETA) News Briefs: AZT plus 3TC is Effective Combination

Bulletin of Experimental Treatments for AIDS, No. 26 September 1995
Ronald Baker, PhD

Scientists at Glaxo Wellcome believe that the combination of AZT/3TC overcomes the problem of HIV resistance that reduces the effectiveness of each drug when taken alone. "The combination of AZT and 3TC is the most efficacious pair of drugs tried to date with respect to the magnitude and duration of changes in CD4 cell number and viral load," according to a report by Brendan Larder, MD, and others in Science (August 4, 1995). For more details on the 3TC/AZT combination, see pages 8-9 in the December 1994 issue of BETA.
