People with PacifiCare Update

Being Alive; August 1996

Two months have gone by since our last update and there is much to report. At the June 21 PacifiCare HIV Task Force Meeting, Client Case Manager Joy Luque discussed the final completion of the HIV/AIDS Standards of Care Manual.

Also announced: Thrifty Long Term Care Pharmacies specializes in serving patients that are home bound or reside in long-term care facilities and also assists people with HIV/AIDS, chronic diseases and disabilities. Located in La Crescenta with a future site in Tustin, they are open 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Delivery is free of charge and can be sent in bubble pack so that unused medications can be returned to the pharmacy for credit. Sundry items can be included with your order and there are no restrictions on the delivery area. If interested in this accomodating service, call them at 818.541.9639.

At the June 22 PWPC meeting, we reviewed the new Case Management brochures included in all new client packets and also placed in some PC Provider offices. You may have seen them already. A lot of painstaking work went into making the language easy to read and the layout clean.

At the July 19 PWPC meeting, Joy restated that anyone with Medicare can enroll in Secure Horizons. It provides the advantage of pharmacy coverage which Medicare does not. If you are interested, call PC's Member Services at 800.662.4092.

Current PacifiCare/Secure Horizons members should note important changes to your prescription formulary. All AIDS treatment medications are now listed on the open formulary and do not require pre-authorization. Any new anti-retroviral or protease inhibitor will be added as FDA approval is obtained. Valtrex (valciclovir) was not added since it has no proven clinical advantage over Zovirax (acyclovir).

And finally, don't look for PC in Consumer Reports' August review of health plans. It appears PC "refused" to send CR their Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set so that their data could be compared to other plans. The next PWPC meeting will be August 17 from 12 to 2 pm at Being Alive in Silverlake. If you have questions about or need information from PC/PWPC, call 213.660.1905 or 800.990.8990 or you can reach me by fax: 213.662.4901 or e-mail: Starboy13@aol.com.
