Cryptosporidium may be one of the worst opportunistic infections associated with HIV disease, and possibly one of the most avoidable. While one may need to act a bit paranoid, warding off this particular OI warrants the extra effort.

In the 1992 year-end issue of Searchlight, a cover story warned that Los Angeles area tap water had been found to contain cryptosporidiosis.html">cryptosporidium. Recently, Milwaukee has been battling crypto-infested water. Area-wide warnings were issued to all citizens, HIV+ or not. Hundreds of cryptosporidium infections were diagnosed in HIV-negative persons. The toll on Milwaukee's HIV+ population was almost epidemic.

Water-safety authorities operate on the "acceptable level theory" for any given parasite. This doesn't necessarily mean that the level is safe for people who are HIV+. New tests of Milwaukee's water, reported on April 15, gave it a "safe again" rating. Do you think this is safe enough?

Remember, heat kills microbes. By boiling our drinking water, crypto needn't ever become a problem. Distilled water is always safe. Use ice made from safe water.
