MEDICAL UPDATE: Liposomal Doxorubicin

MEDICAL UPDATE: Liposomal Doxorubicin

Being Alive/Los Angeles; Being Alive Newsletter - November 1993
presented by Mark Katz, MD and reported by Jim Stoecker

We have been reporting on liposomal drugs for some time. Liposomal technology encases the drug in a fat globule that is able to take that drug exactly you want it to go. This allows the drug to zero in on the target cells and not disturb normal cells. In the process, side effects may be greatly reduced. A liposomal form of AZT is in development. Meanwhile, in the treatment of KS, we are hearing about the liposomal form of the chemotherapy agent, doxorubicin.

A recent letter in Lancet (August 21, 1993) reported on a small study of liposomal doxorubicin where all subjects with low risk KS showed at least partial remission. Low risk disease is defined as limited organ involvement or CD4 above 100. Nine out of ten high risk subjects had some remission. The liposomal form was clearly superior to the standard form. Larger studies are continuing and we should soon have further information on the efficacy of liposomal doxorubicin.
