MEDICAL UPDATE: Japanese Drug Ready for Testing

Vesnarinone is a drug developed in Japan as treatment for congestive heart failure. Somehow researchers found that the drug has an anti-HIV effect by reducing certain harmful cytokines such as TNF and IL-6.

The good news about vesnarinone is that its safety profile is well established. Over 17,000 people in Japan have taken the drug and found it safe.

A small study is now forming at UCLA. This twelve week study will follow 12 participants on 30 mg a day and 12 on 60 mg a day; all participants will receive the drug. To be eligible, you must have CD4 over 300, no antiviral therapy within two weeks prior to the study, and be "essentially asymptomatic." For more information, call UCLA at 310.206.6414.
