MEDICAL UPDATE: HIV Infection in Uganda

Being Alive/Los Angeles; Being Alive Newsletter - November 1993
presented by Mark Katz, MD and reported by Jim Stoecker

We often discuss statistics on HIV infection in Los Angeles County or the United States. We know, however, that this epidemic is worldwide. Recently, the head of the AIDS Control Program in Uganda, an East African nation of 17 million people, estimated that one in eight of that country's residents were HIV+. To date, some 300,000 Ugandans have been diagnosed with AIDS. In contrast, in the US, a country of some 260 million, there are now about 320,000 AIDS cases reported since the epidemic began.
