As mentioned in last month's update, COMBAT (213.469.5888) is sponsoring a local Phase III trial of the reverse transcriptase inhibitor 3TC. Trial NUCA 3001 will test 3TC vs. AZT vs. the two in combination among subjects in the 200-500 CD4 range with no prior AZT use. NUCA 3002 will test AZT/3TC combinations in different doses against combination AZT/ddC in subjects who are in the 100-300 CD4 range and have had at least 24 weeks prior use of AZT.
The trial will include the measurement of more parameters than usual, including viral load, development of resistance, and SI (syncytia inducing) strains. In vitro data indicate that 3TC may be effective in reversing resistance to AZT.
