Being Alive Newsletter, Being Alive/Los Angeles - July 1993
Jennifer Jensen, RD
Then, in the 1990s, something truly remarkable began to develop. It came to be known as "empowerment," and included respect for individuality. There's growing evidence that what may be good for one person isn't necessarily good for others. Except, I suggest, for my recommendation of supplementation in HIV/AIDS.
I'm a registered dietitian and a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the only national organization that issues credentials (RD) to specially trained nutrition professionals. The ADA has always maintained that routine supplementation is not necessary if we eat according to conventional wisdom. My statement about supplements, then, places me somewhat at odds with ADA guidelines. When surveyed, however, over half of all registered dietitians, like myself, admit to taking supplements.
