NUTRITION: Anyone For Another Dozen Pills?

NUTRITION: Anyone For Another Dozen Pills?

Being Alive Newsletter, Being Alive/Los Angeles - July 1993

Nutritionally speaking, "conventional wisdom" has always maintained that we should eat from a wide variety of foods in moderation (the variety and moderation rule). In the late 1980s, nutritionists began adding another component: "small frequent meals," the scientific term for nibbling. The idea is to keep the digestive system working, but not exerting itself, nearly all the time.

Then, in the 1990s, something truly remarkable began to develop. It came to be known as "empowerment," and included respect for individuality. There's growing evidence that what may be good for one person isn't necessarily good for others. Except, I suggest, for my recommendation of supplementation in HIV/AIDS.

I'm a registered dietitian and a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the only national organization that issues credentials (RD) to specially trained nutrition professionals. The ADA has always maintained that routine supplementation is not necessary if we eat according to conventional wisdom. My statement about supplements, then, places me somewhat at odds with ADA guidelines. When surveyed, however, over half of all registered dietitians, like myself, admit to taking supplements.
