ICA9 Report: Immune Therapies

Being Alive Newsletter, Being Alive/Los Angeles - July 1993
Mark Katz, MD and reported by Jim Stoecker

Active immunotherapy includes the vaccines that we have reported on for the last few years. The news on these is about the same. Some efficacy is noted and studies go forward. We still do not know, of course, whether making more viral antibodies actually slows disease progression.

In the area of passive immunotherapy, one researcher reported on the transfusing of lymphocytes from an uninfected twin to an HIV+ one. For those with a seronegative twin, this may be noteworthy news.

Finally, we have a small study of interleukin-2 (IL-2). Six people received high dose IL-2 for five days and then were off the drug for six weeks. Researchers noted a sustained rise in T-cells for those on the study. IL-2 is probably the most direct and potent stimulator of T-cells that we have available. The question that has yet to be answered is whether a rise in T-cells translates to prolonged survival.
