Being Alive Newsletter, Being Alive/Los Angeles - July 1993 Mark Katz, MD and reported by Jim Stoecker
Studies are still looking at whether AZT, ddC or ddI is the superior antiviral. A San Francisco study presented at the conference was the first to directly compare ddC to ddI. Two groups in late stage HIV disease were randomized to either ddI or ddC. After four months, researchers noted a statistically significant advantage to ddC over ddI. However, incidence of peripheral neuropathy was 44% of those on ddC and only 21% of those on ddI.
The general thinking today is that AZT, ddI and ddC work comparably well, but that their efficacy is limited. We simply need something better.
