ICA9 Report: Epidemiology

ICA9 Report: Epidemiology

Being Alive Newsletter, Being Alive/Los Angeles - July 1993
Mark Katz, MD and reported by Jim Stoecker

Since the last International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam, some half million people worldwide have become infected with HIV. Experts now estimate that there may be 15 million HIV+ people in the world. The fastest growing HIV+ population is in Southeast Asia; in Thailand, studies estimate a growth of some 350,000 cases of HIV infection in just the last two years.

One international health expert offered a simple HIV prevention package:

- condoms - treatment of sexually transmitted diseases - HIV education in the schools - HIV information through the media - needle exchange programs - prostitute/client safety initiatives - safety of the blood supply.

Such a prevention program would cost some $2-3 billion a year worldwide, but could save some $90 billion in potential treatment costs by the end of the decade.
