Total Lung Capacity Breathing For Aerosolized Pentamidine

Total Lung Capacity Breathing For Aerosolized Pentamidine

Being Alive Newsletter, Being Alive/Los Angeles - May 1993
John Lewis

[An improved method of administering aerosolized pentamidine for Pneumocystis Carnii pneumonia prophylaxis was mentioned in April's Medical Update. This is an edited version of an article that will be published in PAAC Notes later this year. It explains both the breathing technique and Lewis' reasons for recommending the use of aerosolized pentamidine (AP).]

Pneumocystis Carnii pneumonia (PCP) is one of the most common and deadly complications of AIDS. Better diagnostic and prophylactic protocols for the disease have improved survival rates, but the death rate from PCP is still significant.

I believe this rate can be cut if patients use the proper breathing technique when receiving AP, one of the most widely used PCP preventatives. To that end, it is important that those dispensing the medication teach the patient the most effective way to utilize AP.
