MEDICAL UPDATE: Fluconazole vs. Ketoconazole

Being Alive Newsletter; December 1992
Mark Katz MD and reported by Jim Stoecker

A recent Annals of Internal Medicine reported on the results of a USC-based study that compared the efficacy of fluconazole to ketoconazole in the treatment of candida esophagitis. Fluconazole was the clear winner. 91% of those treated with fluconazole showed the candida completely gone after the treatment course. In contrast, only 52% of those on ketoconazole showed complete remission. In addition to its superior efficacy, fluconazole is known to penetrate well into the cerebrospinal fluid and thus may be an effective prophylaxis for cyptococcus.
