ICL: Antiviral Therapies

Being Alive; November 1992

Data were presented on the safety and tolerance studies for 3TC, another AZT/ddI/ddC-like antiretroviral drug being developed by the Glaxo pharmaceutical company. While offering no promise of being a real breakthrough in therapy, the studies indicate good reason for believing this may turn out to be the least toxic of its class. Indeed, early tests in people reveal NO significant toxic side effects at effective doses. More extensive clinical trials are expected to begin early in 1993.

Even smaller and earlier safety and tolerance studies were also presented on different classes of antiviral drugs, particularly the tat and protease inhibitors. These indicated mostly that trials are continuing without significant new evidence so far of either discouraging or exciting nature.
