Spiritual Dimensions of AIDS

Spiritual Dimensions of AIDS

"In the spiritual world, HIV has no power," declared Marianne Williamson, renowned exponent on the Course in Miracles, at a HIV support group. The essence of this statement is more easily grasped when one encounters the innumerable men in spiritual texts beset with seemingly insurmountable circumstances who, through a conscious submission of the limited self to the Unlimited Self, eventually overcome all obstacles.

This also is one of the principal concepts expounded by the Shaman within the Kahuna healing system: "there are no limits." Thus, as the lepers within Biblical times were miraculously cured by the prophetic master, so it is that AIDS patients, perhaps in concentratedly connecting with the spiritual source, can effect healing. And, though the AIDS virus will still unfortunately claim the lives of many, this does not overshadow the fact that some can live to speak of the miracle.

One case in point is Ralph Masek, a resident in the Los Angeles area who five years ago was beset with HIV-related lymphoma. During this stage of his disease, he lost his eyesight and was told that there was no chance of recovery; yet, today he is "clinically well in all respects," to quote his present physician. When I asked Ralph what was the cause of his complete remission (even the restoration of his eyesight), he replied, "I believed in the healing power of a Higher Being and did not succumb to the thought of the practitioners who said I'd be dead in six months."

Then, too, there is the account of Nori Asistent who by embracing sprirtuality, meditation, breath therapy, in addition to following her intuition, not only survived AIDS but reversed her seropositive status to seronegative. "What I had learned and read on AIDS I did not believe, so I decided to isolate myself from the media." Actually, Nori admitted in They Conquered AIDS that she was not directly focusing on getting well as much as practicing going with the flow and totally being present in whatever she was doing. This ultimately resulted in the manifestation of a wholeness of being.

One question I have often asked is, "Why AIDS now?" It was this rhetorical question that led me to recall the bubonic plague that occurred during the transition from the Dark Ages into the Renaissance, the Rebirth of Consciousness. In reality, the AIDS epidemic is similar to the former plague since it too is occurring during a transitional phase from the Piscean into the Aquarian Age. Could it then be that the advent of AIDS is not only a message for the soul to create a more harmonious relationship with the Higher Self, but also is a signal of a shift in the universal consciousness?

Since AIDS is sexually transmitted, are we being forced to abandon the unsafe, anonymous, orgiastic sex which typified the Piscean period and to adopt safe sex practices, monogamy and even abstinence during the Aquarian era?

The Aquarian, one of the few within the zodiac not symbolized as an animal figure (fish, ram, goat, etc.), allegorically alludes to a universal embodiment of the Human principle. Hu means light while man denotes mind, so to be human is to understand that now is the time to merge with the light, the Light Within, the Divinity, the Perfect Self, as the unseen healing power mysteriously unfolds. In the spiritual world, disease is nothing more than a conceived separation from the One.

Thus, in having AIDS or being HIV+ one is faced with the dilemma of not only taking proper herbs, foods, supplements, homeopathic remedies as well as allopathic medicines, but also the creation of a more meaningful relationship with the Unknown, the All within All. Even still, just how can one rid the mind of the undue doubt, worry, fear and guilt to effect this union? What are those activities that can bring a more relaxed, happy, carefree state? Prayer? Meditation? Breath therapy? Dancing? Painting? Being with nature?

One assured way to alleviate mental and emotional imbalance is to dedicatedly be in the company of those committed to elevating their consciousness.

No one can conquer death, yet in allowing HIV to serve as a catalyst to enhance the relationship with the Real Self, one becomes open to the possibility of a healthier, happier, healed life.
