NEWS IN BRIEF: Latest Trials Open

AIDS Treatment Update, Issue 65, May 1998

The new edition of NAM's HIV & AIDS Treatments Directory includes full details of 35 clinical trials currently taking place in the UK. The latest studies, now open for recruiting, include the following (codes in brackets indicate participating centres, with contact details in the table below):

- A comparison of AZT/3TC/abacavir (1592U89) versus AZT/3TC/indinavir for previously untreated people with CD4 counts above 100 and viral load above 10,000 (KCH, RF, RL).

- A trial of cidofovir for treating the brain infection PML (BRI, CW, EDI, RF).

- A trial for people whose viral load has been suppressed to below detection using a protease inhibitor plus two NRTIs. The study will see whether people who stop taking their NRTIs and add efavirenz (DMP-266) to their current protease inhibitor, or who stop their protease inhibitor and add efavirenz to their current NRTIs, sustain their `undetectable' viral load better than those who remain on their current triple therapy (KCH, CW).

- Two trials of the immune-booster interleukin-2, one in which it is taken in combination with anti-HIV therapy (CW), and one in which it is taken on its own (BRI, CW, MMC, RF, StM).

- A trial for people with viral load greater than 15,000 testing various doses of nelfinavir (twice or three times daily) in combination with d4T/3TC (BRI, CW, EDI, MMC, RF, StT).

- A trial of AZT/3TC/abacavir/amprenavir for newly infected people (BEL, BRI, CAR, CW, MAN, RF).

- Two trials of valganciclovir, which breaks down in the body to provide high levels of ganciclovir, to treat CMV retinitis and prevent recurrences (BRI, CW, MAN, StM).
