NEWS IN BRIEF: Easier Dosing

AIDS Treatment Update, Issue 65, May 1998

Boehringer-Ingelheim, manufacturer of nevirapine, is now investigating whether nevirapine can be taken once a day. Nevirapine levels decline very slowly in the blood, and some doctors in the UK are already prescribing nevirapine for once daily use. A study conducted in Germany found that nevirapine, 3TC and ddI, all taken once daily, was highly effective in suppressing viral load below the limit of detection.

Pharmacia & Upjohn, manufacturers of the NNRTI delavirdine, say that they have recent data suggesting that delavirdine may be suitable for twice daily dosing. The current recommended schedule is three times daily.
