NEWS IN BRIEF: Still Free to Choose Clinics

AIDS Treatment Update, Issue 64, April 1998

New funding arrangements for Health Authorities will not alter the ability of people with HIV to choose to attend a clinic outside their own Health Authority.

The Department of Health has changed the way it funds Health Authorities to meet the cost of treating new patients. For people who are diagnosed HIV-positive and start treatment after 1st April 1998, the Health Authority where they live will be responsible for paying for their combination therapy, regardless of which clinics they attend for treatment.

Will Huxter of the Inner London HIV Health Commissioners Group said that despite this change, all people diagnosed with HIV remain free to choose the hospital which they wish to attend. This new arrangement will also not require any confidential information about individual people with HIV to be disclosed to Health Authorities.
