But according to the most recent advice from its manufacturer, Abbott, experiments show that the drug remains active provided that it is not exposed to temperatures above 25 to 30? C. Whilst these temperatures are the norm in Mediterranean countries during the summer, they are rare in the UK. The company's recommendation to keep ritonavir in the fridge is a pan-European one, designed to accommodate the worst case scenario in Europe.
In the UK, though, refrigeration is only likely to be necessary in hot weather or if you need to keep your home at a high temperature during the winter months. Otherwise it is safe to store ritonavir in a cool place, out of the sun and away from the heat. Be careful about keeping the drug in places which can get hot, such as in the car. If it causes little or no inconvenience it is still safest to keep the drug in the fridge.
