d4T & 3TC

AIDS Treatment Update, No. 44, August 1996
Edward King

Two small studies which looked at the combination of d4T plus 3TC suggested it was superior to the combination of AZT plus 3TC for people who had previously taken AZT.

One study looked at participants in the 3TC open label programme who also received d4T at a hospital in Miami. Those with baseline CD4 counts over 50 had better viral load and CD4 count responses (Tu.B.2130). Another study from Vancouver found that among AZT-experienced people, those who switched to d4T plus 3TC had greater and more sustained CD4 count increases and declines in viral load than those who stayed on AZT and added 3TC (Tu.B.2132).

Both studies showed that the combination was well tolerated, but neuropathy was reported as a side-effect.
