Writing opportunities: NAM needs more writers on treatments issues

AIDS TREATMENT UPDATE, Issue 27 - March 1995
Will Anderson

Are you interested in writing about treatments issues or living with HIV or AIDS? You don't have to have a medical background or even a detailed understanding of treatments issues to help: there is a range of opportunities for people with experience of HIV and AIDS - both those living with HIV or AIDS and those working for them.

There are two publications which we are seeking help with: AIDS Treatment Update itself and Living with AIDS.

LIVING WITH AIDS

Living with AIDS is a publication in development in memory of the late Dr Simon Mansfield who pioneered primary care for people living with AIDS in west London. Simon was also a trustee of NAM and was keen to promote a very user-friendly resource for people living with symptomatic HIV infection or AIDS, partly in recognition of the success of the first Living with AIDS book produced by Frontliners in the late Eighties.

A group of people, some living with AIDS, met during 1994 and put together a detailed outline of this publication. This group will remain in editorial control of the book but we now need writers to help complete the book and make it a success.

The writing we are looking for is principally about personal experience of living with symptomatic HIV infection or AIDS. There are opportunities to write about all aspects of living with AIDS including:

- coping with particular medical conditions - rethinking personal priorities in life - getting the best out of the health service - effects on relationships and sex, etc.

If you feel confident about being able to write about living with symptomatic HIV infection or AIDS, drop us a line or give us a ring and we will send you full details of the project. Because this project is funded entirely from donations to the Simon Mansfield Fund, all writing is being done in a voluntary capacity. NAM can only pay necessary expenses.

AIDS TREATMENT UPDATE

The writing opportunities for AIDS Treatment Update are broader and may be of interest to carers, workers and medical professionals as well as people living with HIV or AIDS.

Over the next year we hope to develop a wider content for the newsletter, including more coverage of:

- positive living - nutrition - long term survival and disease progression - co-factors - understanding immunology and virology - living with specific conditions - using treatment drugs - monitoring health and illness - the health and pharmaceutical industries - issues for particular communities affected.

The range of writing we are looking for is wide - from case studies of living with particular physical conditions or taking particular drugs to more technical writing on treatments and therapy.

Again, if you are interested in writing, contact us and we will send you more details. Writers for AIDS Treatment Update are paid at our standard commission rates.

NAM is able to offer some support to prospective writers who are unsure if they have the skills to write for these publications. If you are in this position, let us know and we may be able to help you. Similarly, if you think you may be able to support someone in developing writing skills, please also get in touch.
