What if you have already called your representatives about an important issue, and want to do more? One way is to get your friends to call; start your own informal telephone tree. It is especially important for people in places like San Francisco to get friends and family elsewhere to call or write their representatives. In most of the country, politicians almost never hear from their constituents about AIDS, so they do not think it is important to the people they are being paid to represent. (Or they hear only from the forces of organized hate. For example, even in San Francisco, with over ten thousand AIDS deaths, politicians get calls and letters opposing AIDS research on the grounds that the disease is God's punishment for homosexuals.) When representatives have heard little or nothing from their constituents, even a few letters or calls supporting sensible policies can be very important. They know that every one who takes the time to contact them represents many more who also care about the situation.
