(ATN) NIAID Recommends Corticosteroids in Pneumocystis Treatment

On October 10 the U. S. National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases published a note to physicians, "Important Information on the Clinical Benefit of Systemic Corticosteroids As Adjunctive Therapy for Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia in AIDS." Several studies have found that early use of these steroids could cut death rates by half or more in cases of moderate or severe pneumocystis. No benefit was shown with mild disease.

To evaluate these studies, NIAID and the University of California, San Diego, convened a consensus panel in May, 1990. The panel's conclusions, together with two of the studies, will be published in November in The New England Journal of Medicine. The note to physicians was published earlier to make the information immediately available.
