(ATDN) Treatment Briefs: Lobucavir for CMV

Treatment Review No. 23 - December 1996

A new drug called lobucavir is being studied for the treatment of newly diagnosed CMV retinitis. CMV retinitis is an infection caused by a herpesvirus that people with low T4 cells can get. If untreated, the infection leads to blindness. Lobucavir is an antiviral drug that is active against many different herpesviruses, as well as HIV. In an early study, lobucavir reduced the amount of HIV in the blood by over 90%. Lobucavir is a pill that is taken 4 times a day. Call the Network if you'd like a referral to the study site.
