(ATDN) Oral Ganciclovir Approved

Treatment Review #16; January 1995

Oral ganciclovir received approval for marketing from the FDA on January 5, 1995. Oral ganciclovir is a pill. The pill can be used for maintenance for some people, although intravenous ganciclovir is still necessary for initial treatment. The FDA has recommended that oral ganciclovir be used only for those "for whom the risk of more rapid disease progression is balanced by the benefit associated with avoiding daily IV infusions."
