Pathogenesis: Mutant Receptor May Accelerate AIDS Progression

NewsRx - A team of researchers from France and the U.S. have identified mutations in a cell receptor that may accelerate the progression of AIDS after HIV infection in some patients.

This version of the receptor could become a clinical target for HIV therapy, say the study's authors. HIV breaches the cell wall with the help of the well-known CD4 receptor and a host of coreceptors.

The study screened three groups of HIV patients for mutations in one of these coreceptors specific to Caucasian populations, and found that one mutated version was associated with quicker progression of HIV.

The exact mechanism behind this effect is still uncertain, but may be related to HIV's ability to invade the cell or the antiviral immune response associated with such an infection.

The study was published in the journal Science (S. Faure et al., "Rapid progression to AIDS in HIV+ individuals with a structural variant of the chemokine receptor CX3 CR1").Science 2000 Mar 24;287(5461):2274-7
