The National Commission on AIDS calls on the President, as the "CEO of the nation," to set an example of how employers should deal with HIV/AIDS in the workplace. The Commission makes this request in a special report, "HIV/AIDS: A Challenge for the Workplace," to be released tomorrow.

In the report the Commission specifically recommends President Clinton:

* speak out often and publicly on the need for employers to address HIV disease as a workplace issue.

* mount a commitment to developing workplace policies tailored for each federal agency.

* mandate ongoing employee education for the entire federal workforce; education at all federal workplaces be completed by 1994.

* create a CEO Advisory Council on AIDS to assist the Administration in galvanizing the business and labor sectors response to HIV/AIDS.

* underscore the Administration's commitment to the Americans With Disabilities Act.

* lead a national observance of World AIDS Day.

Specific recommendations also are made for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Small Business Administration, Department of Labor, and the Food and Drug Administration.

The National Commission on AIDS will release, "HIV/AIDS: A Challenge for the Workplace," on June 2, 1993. In addition to recommendations, this report contains a synopsis of testimony presented during the Commission's hearings held in March.

The National Leadership Coalition on AIDS and several Coalition members provided testimony and helped guide the Commission's decision to focus the entire hearing on the workplace. Copies of "HIV/AIDS: A Challenge for the Workplace" will be sent to members of the National Leadership Coalition on AIDS early next week.
