Drug industry contributors on the Clinton list include Pfizer Inc. (between $500,001 and $1 million) and Mylan Inc. ($100,001 to $250,000) of the U.S. and Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. ($100,001 to $250,000) of India. Pfizer and Ranbaxy both sell AIDS drugs, and Mylan owns a majority stake in Matrix Laboratories Ltd., an Indian drug maker that sells AIDS drugs.
Harold Snyder, who gave between $1,000,001 and $5 million, is a director of Israeli drug maker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., according to the companyÆs Web site.
Through the PresidentÆs Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the U.S. purchases more than $400 million a year in AIDS drugs for patients in the developing world. The official in charge of PEPFAR serves under the secretary of state.
Many U.S. drug companies have big international operations and are affected by a myriad of intellectual property, trade, tax and safety issues in which the State Department can have involvement to one degree or another.
