Stephen Udem, vice president of exploratory vaccine discovery research at Wyeth Vaccines Research, a unit of Wyeth, will become IAVI's senior vice president of vaccine development. He succeeds Emilio Emini, who left IAVI in December to join Wyeth. Dr. Udem also will hold the title of chief scientific officer at IAVI. His appointment is effective June 1.
John McGoldrick, executive vice president of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. in charge of law, government affairs, philanthropy and global policy, will join IAVI as senior vice president of external strategy development, a new post focused on fund raising and resources management. Mr. McGoldrick's appointment is effective May 30.
IAVI has helped to put six AIDS vaccine products into human tests around the world, and tested a seventh in collaboration with the Vaccine Research Center of the National Institutes of Health. IAVI has five vaccine clinical trials under way.
IAVI, which is funded by governments, corporations, philanthropies and individuals, advances AIDS vaccines through product-development partnerships with pharmaceutical companies. IAVI finances research and development, including clinical trials, for AIDS vaccine candidates.
Seth Berkley, IAVI's president and chief executive officer, said in an interview that AIDS vaccine work is accelerating. "You've got extremely difficult science, but we're moving into a renaissance," he said. He cited forthcoming data from several vaccines that spark a cellular immune response, and a push to crack the challenge of making neutralizing antibodies to block infection.
