EU Approves HIV Drug For Marketing in Europe

Wall Street Journal - January 23, 1998

Agouron Pharmaceuticals Inc., San Diego, said the European Commission approved Viracept, its drug for HIV, for marketing to adults and children in Europe. Agouron and its partner, Japan Tobacco Inc. 's pharmaceutical unit, previously gave rights to a unit of Roche Holding AG of Switzerland to market the drug in Europe and territories outside North America and Asia. Agouron said the drug, already approved for sale in Switzerland, will be available in Germany, France and the U. K. in the first quarter of 1998, followed by other European countries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Viracept in March, and Agouron said Viracept now holds a 31% share of the U.S. market for protease-inhibitor drugs. Agouron shares fell $1.875 to $31.375 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading.
