Health: Home Access's HIV Test Gets Approval From FDA

The Wall Street Journal - July 25, 1996

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Home Access Health Corp. received Food and Drug Administration approval for its home HIV blood test, the second such product the agency has cleared for marketing.

The test requires users to call a toll-free number to register a home access code number and participate in pretest counseling. There had been criticism that home tests in general wouldn't lend themselves to such counseling.

The test kit can be ordered by calling 1-800-HIV-TEST. Johnson & Johnson, which makes the other FDA-approved home HIV test, said its test kit is currently available in states other than New York and California through 1-800-THE-TEST. Johnson & Johnson said its test should also be available in most drugstores nationwide this fall.

Home Access Health said test users must prick their fingers and place drops of blood on filter paper; the sample is sent to Home Access Health's laboratory. The company said that anyone who tests positive will receive the result from a professional counselor.
