Technology Brief -- UNIMED PHARMACEUTICALS INC.: FDA Approves the Testing Of Drug for AIDS Patients

The Wall Street Journal - 2 April 1996

Unimed Pharmaceuticals Inc. said it received federal Food and Drug Administration approval to begin testing the safety and effectiveness of its drug to treat HIV wasting syndrome. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., pharmaceutical company said the "Phase II" clinical trials of its new product, Androgel-DHT, will be conducted at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. The company also said the drug, under FDA rules, qualifies for orphan-drug status, which would give Unimed exclusive right to sell the drug for a number of years if it is finally approved. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. Many AIDS patients suffer from extreme weight loss caused by the disease.
