The Wall Street Journal - 14 March 1996
After a year of research, a panel led by Princeton virologist Arnold Levine has concluded that although the NIH's work has been commendable, some programs need revision.
"While much of the NIH AIDS portfolio is of the highest quality and relevance, the [panel members] were convinced that there is a need for improved focus and better coordination between research programs," according to the report, which is being released today.
The panel, made up of nongovernment researchers, also called for more participation in NIH projects by outside scientists; better integration of NIH programs with other programs both within the organization and outside it; more collaboration with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries; more research and better integrated research on preventing transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS; and more involvement from community advocates.
Mark Harrington, a member of the panel and director of the AIDS organization Treatment Action Group, called the report "a clear road map for the next five years of the AIDS epidemic."
