AIDS report card shows grades for D.C. improving: Local AIDS watchdog group praises Mayor Fenty

Washington Blade - August 7, 2009

D.C. Appleseed, a local AIDS watchdog group, is praising Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration for continuing the city's efforts to improve its response to the AIDS epidemic, which experts say has hit the city harder than any other jurisdiction in the United States.

In its fifth annual D.C. AIDS report card, released this week, Appleseed gave the city four A-level grades, seven B-level grades and one C-level grade for 12 AIDS-related programs or administrative duties that the group says are crucial for curtailing the city's high rate of HIV infections.

Appleseed says in its 29-page report accompanying the latest round of grades that the city government has made "significant progress" in implementing a series of recommendations the group issued with its first report card four years ago.

"While the fifth report card's generally positive grades reflect that progress, the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to devastate our city," says the report. "What is needed now is not only a sustained, superior performance by the government, but also a strong commitment from non-government organizations like businesses, places of worship, civic organizations and the entertainment industry."

The group's current report card gives letter grades for areas such as:

*Leadership is B+

*Interagency coordination is Aû

*HIV surveillance is A

*Monitoring and evaluation is Bû

*HIV testing is A

*Condom distribution is B+

*Youth Initiatives is B
